Knowing Your Rights in the NDIS: A Guide for Participants and Carers

Last Updated: July 2026
NDIS

Living with a disability, or caring for someone with a disability can be full of challenges in the NDIS.

It’s important to understand your rights, what self-advocacy means, and where to turn for support.

MyCareSpace is here to help you feel confident and informed every step of the way.

What Does Self-Advocacy Mean?

Self‑advocacy means speaking up for yourself in a way that’s clear, respectful, and informed.

It’s knowing what you need, expressing it, and taking part in decisions that affect your life.

The Independent Mental Health Advocacy model outlines a helpful six‑step process:

  1. Identify the issue
  2. Know your rights
  3. Identify your solutions
  4. Make a plan
  5. Enact the plan
  6. Review what happened

By learning this process, you can engage with the NDIS system more effectively, ensuring your voice is heard.

Your Rights under the NDIS

As an NDIS participant, you have the right to:

  • Access quality services
  • Make choices
  • Have control over your NDIS plan and service agreement
  • Choose the providers, supports and services that meet your needs

SSI’s Rights Path Project

Funded by the Dept of Social Services, SSI created a collection multilingual videos and guides (in Khmer, Punjabi, Urdu, Vietnamese, and English) to help you confidently share feedback and navigate your NDIS services.

SSI is a national not-for-profit organisation which has been providing dedicated human and social services across NSW, QLD and Victoria for the past 24 years.
